I’ve forgotten how to blog…

I have this really bad habit of composing blog posts in my head while I’m lying in bed in the early morning hours wishing I was sleeping.

This habit wouldn’t be so bad if any of those blog posts actually made it onto my blog the next day. Most of the time by the next day the only thing I can remember is that I had an idea for a blog post, but the specifics of the idea are gone.

I’ve thought about just getting up out of bed and writing the post right then, but my sleep schedule is already messed up as it is. The same goes for picking up my phone and writing a quick note to remind myself. I’m already trying desperately to fall asleep, so I’m not about to let the light from my phone be another excuse for my brain to continue to stay wide awake for longer. Not to mention the fact that I don’t want to wake my sleeping husband who usually only has a few to a couple more hours to sleep before he has to get up by the time I head to bed.

So instead I lie in bed and remember that once again I didn’t post anything on my blog the day before, feel guilty for neglecting my blog and start to mentally compose yet another blog post that will (literally) never see the light of day.

When it is day and I have the opportunity to actually post something on my blog, I usually have no idea what I might want to say.

Not much of interest has been going on in my life lately.

My husband and I splurged and bought ourselves Samsung Galaxy S7 phones. This is the first time we’ve ever had the most recent model of anything and we’re hoping that it will buy us a bit more time before these become obsolete. There was a bit of drama where it had been several days and our “overnight shipping” order still hadn’t even finished processing and it took calling the company we bought from a couple of times to discover that we had somehow created “Schrödinger’s Payment”. You see, the payment was showing as “paid” and “not paid” at the very same time. A weird series of glitches happened while paying for our order and once the correct department was aware our order finished processing and our phones were finally shipped.

Only to then temporarily be taken hostage by FedEx. We missed the original delivery and instead of delivering the phones to the apartment complex office like the driver was supposed to he took them back to the FedEx location with him to attempt to deliver them the next day. Curtis even got a ride to the FedEx location only to not be able to get the package because his ID still has our old address on it. The phones were successfully delivered the next day though.

I also successfully (I hope) fought with my doctor’s office billing department to get them to fix a mistake that they made that caused me to be billed for things that my insurance would happily pay for completely if only they were coded correctly. To my surprise my insurance company happily backed me up and left a message with my doctor’s office letting them know that it was on them to fix this simple error and told them exactly what they needed in order to be able to cover my claim properly.

I also learned during this time that my Depo Provera birth control injections are stupid expensive and that I am super happy that my insurance covers them 100% when billed correctly.

This was the second time that I’ve been billed for preventative care that should be paid for by my insurance (because it’s the law) because they coded something wrong, only the first time they refused to fix it and I just paid for it out of my own pocket because I didn’t have the time or energy to fight it. We decided not to risk having something like this happen again and found another, more convenient, Doctor’s Office nearby that takes our insurance. We will meet our new doctor in the beginning of October.

I’ve mostly been keeping myself entertained lately via TV, reading (Sack NastyThe Erratic Sun, and A Death On Skunk Street. Buy these books!), social media, Pinterest, (is that a form of social media? I literally just gave in and tried it a few days ago and have just started to understand it.) and playing Pokémon Go with my husband.

I did have my husband help me cut my hair again a couple nights ago. I decided I wanted to do something different and these were the results:

I’ll end this post with a couple of examples of what me and my cat look like when we’re turned into art by another one of my latest obsessions, Prisma.

Over the weekend I…

Over the weekend I:

~Finally got the chance to see “Jurassic World” with Curtis. I really wish that we could have seen it in theaters. Maybe we’ll eventually be able to own a copy and will watch it in the theater room in the apartment complex that we are moving to in a month and a half.

~Totally had dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets for dinner the next night because I still had (/always have) dinosaurs on the brain (and because Costco had them on sale during our last shopping trip).

~Discovered that Curtis and I are already almost out of boxes for our move. All that we have left right now are some smaller boxes. We almost didn’t have enough boxes large enough to pack away the contents of our bookcases. Our one humongous box that we saved from our last move had to be used to store a combination of our board games and most of our blankets and comforters (thank goodness for space bags). We are really hoping that the U-Haul close to us still has that “leave a box, take a box” box set up so that we can hopefully pick up some more free boxes next weekend and continue to put off spending any money on boxes.

Great Idea until packing

~ Raided some of the boxes that had already been packed away to find what was left of my hair bleaching kit and “Ultra Violet” Manic Panic hair dye, plus my hair dryer. I then spent several hours Saturday night dyeing my hair purple. I am still sore today from all the time spent “heat treating” my hair with my hair dryer both while using the bleach and the purple hair color, and all the time spent kneeling with my head hanging over the tub to rinse out (with cold water) all the various substances involved in bleaching and dyeing ones hair. Here is the result of all my effort.

~ Walked to a couple of stores with Curtis with the intention of spending most of the money that we had on stocking up on food and buying Curtis a new pair sneakers. After Curtis found his new shoes we got sidetracked in the electronics section and ended up buying me a new (purple!) phone charger cord to replace the original one that was more electrical tape than cord. We luckily remembered to also buy some food before leaving the store.

~ Mused with Curtis about how different our lives might be now if we had never moved out of Connecticut. What sort of work might he have found? How much tighter might our finances be due to the higher cost of living and the fact that we probably wouldn’t have been able to get rid of our car. What if we had moved to Vermont like we always thought we would? Or if we had decided to not continue on to Utah while driving through Pennsylvania and had settled down there instead like we were tempted to? What if we had moved into the apartment complex that was our first choice when moving to Utah instead of into our third choice because it had Sunday hours? What differences might living in a completely different part of the Salt Lake Valley have made in the course of our lives?

~ Was stopped dead in my tracks by the beauty of Autumn starting finally starting to really show up out here. Bright yellow leaves popping against dark blueish gray clouds. Trees with red edged green leaves next to trees with leaves a burgundy red. There is a reason that Autumn is my favorite season.

I shaved my head and people freaked out…

I made the decision to shave my head a couple of days ago and posted a picture of the result on Facebook.

9-10-2015

I knew that people were going to be surprised by just how short I went, just the year before I had hair down past my hips.

IMG_20130316_112143

But I had been slowly cutting it shorter and shorter over the past year, and had recently cut it to about a 1/2 inch long so I didn’t think that it was really all that drastic or sudden of a change.

I got a lot of positive feedback, along with some somewhat neutral, possibly negative feedback. A guy friend of mine commented that he’s “had that same haircut!” He happens to have long hair now, so my response was “And I’ve had your current hairstyle before!”

And then I got a message asking me if I was “doing alright” “because few women shave their heads.”

turtle-is-not-angry

Which honestly pissed me off.

A woman deciding to shave her head is not a sign of mental illness.

Then my grandmother straight out asked me in a comment on my picture if I was fighting cancer.

Oh No She Didn't Just Say That

To which I asked her if she seriously thought that I wouldn’t let everyone know that I was if that was what was going on.

Not every woman who shaves her head is sick. Some women shave their heads because they like the way they look with short hair.

I was then meant to feel guilty about my decision because “some women would do almost anything to have such beautiful hair.”

It’s not like I permanently cut off my hair. If I stop cutting it, it’ll grow back.

Also, I am in no way obligated to wear my hair long simply because other people find it pretty.

WhatYouThinkOfYourself

Think of it this way: My husband cuts his hair just as short as mine all the time and nobody cares. Because he’s a guy.

But when a woman, such as myself, decides to shave her head it’s a big deal and some people decide that she must be ill in some way (either physically or mentally) because “why would a woman shave her head?”

Warning Reflections in Mirror Distorted

“Because she felt like it” is a perfectly acceptable answer to that question by the way.

There is absolutely no reason why a woman can’t style her hair any damn way she wants, including deciding to shave it all off. Women don’t need long hair to still be feminine.

And the only reason why it should be a big deal is because of how awesome she looks with her new hairstyle.

Too Busy Being Awesome

And if “bald is beautiful” is only true to you if that person has cut their hair off for health reasons, if you are offended by the thought of women shaving their heads simply because they want to, I suggest that you may never have really meant it in the first place. Other women who are healthy deciding to shave their heads in no way takes away from the courageousness of women who had less choice in the matter.

Women are beautiful. Period. Hair length has nothing to with it.

The extremes of my hair, continued…

So, when I cut my hair to a 1/2 inch long I told people that was as short as I was gonna go.

8-30-2015

I had already had a friend joke with me/make a concerned comment when I my hair was an inch long that if I went much shorter that my husband and I would have the same haircut.

Well, now we do.

9-10-2015

Or at least we will once my husband trims his hair again. Right now my husband is actually the one with longer hair.

Which is fine. He can do whatever he wants with his hair.

And so can I. It’s only hair. It’ll grow back.

And then I can cut it all of again or let it continue to grow depending on how I feel.

The extremes of my hair…

When I started this blog almost 3 years ago I had extremely long hair. And at the time I had no plans of ever cutting it short ever again.

wpid-IMG_20140128_134053.jpg IMG_20130207_162309 IMG_20130316_112143

But then I started to feel like my hair was getting too long and that it was just too much work to maintain it. So in March of 2014 I did cut it.

In fact, I had my husband cut off about 15 inches of my hair. And for a while I was happy with it. It was quicker and easier to care for, and it didn’t get in the way as much. But it was still long, and eventually I got tired of the maintenance it required as well. So I had my husband cut my hair again this past April.

4-23-2015

And then I cut it again this past July. And dyed it a dark purple.

7-13-2015 7-13-2015 back

At this point one of my friends told me that she thought I looked better with long hair and pointed out that if I went much shorter my husband and I would have the same hairstyle. I laughed at this and told her that I have gone about as short as my husband cuts his before.

And then I cut it again just a couple of days ago.

8-30-2015

It is now only a 1/2 inch long. Which is still longer than the 1/8 inch that my husband cuts his to, but pretty damn close to the two of us having the same hairstyle. I’m not quite sure what point my friend was trying to get across with her comment, but I don’t think that I’m going to confuse anyone with my “boys” haircut.

I know that when I allow my hair to grow out that it’s gorgeous and thick. I know that a lot of people would love to have hair like mine when it’s long. And I know that I probably look better with longer hair.

BUT, I also know just how exhausting and time-consuming it can be to care for my hair when it’s long. I was frustrated with the amount of maintenance that it required when it was only an inch long. So that’s why I cut it as short as it is. Because this hairstyle is NO maintenance. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

I’m giving myself a break from bad hair days for a while.

I’m giving myself the gift of the time that I would have had to spend on maintaining my hair, every day, if I had kept it long or had even just kept it an inch long.

Also, it’s only hair. It’ll grow back.
