Over the weekend I…

Over the weekend I:

~Finally got the chance to see “Jurassic World” with Curtis. I really wish that we could have seen it in theaters. Maybe we’ll eventually be able to own a copy and will watch it in the theater room in the apartment complex that we are moving to in a month and a half.

~Totally had dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets for dinner the next night because I still had (/always have) dinosaurs on the brain (and because Costco had them on sale during our last shopping trip).

~Discovered that Curtis and I are already almost out of boxes for our move. All that we have left right now are some smaller boxes. We almost didn’t have enough boxes large enough to pack away the contents of our bookcases. Our one humongous box that we saved from our last move had to be used to store a combination of our board games and most of our blankets and comforters (thank goodness for space bags). We are really hoping that the U-Haul close to us still has that “leave a box, take a box” box set up so that we can hopefully pick up some more free boxes next weekend and continue to put off spending any money on boxes.

Great Idea until packing

~ Raided some of the boxes that had already been packed away to find what was left of my hair bleaching kit and “Ultra Violet” Manic Panic hair dye, plus my hair dryer. I then spent several hours Saturday night dyeing my hair purple. I am still sore today from all the time spent “heat treating” my hair with my hair dryer both while using the bleach and the purple hair color, and all the time spent kneeling with my head hanging over the tub to rinse out (with cold water) all the various substances involved in bleaching and dyeing ones hair. Here is the result of all my effort.

11-2-2015 1 11-2-2015 2

~ Walked to a couple of stores with Curtis with the intention of spending most of the money that we had on stocking up on food and buying Curtis a new pair sneakers. After Curtis found his new shoes we got sidetracked in the electronics section and ended up buying me a new (purple!) phone charger cord to replace the original one that was more electrical tape than cord. We luckily remembered to also buy some food before leaving the store.

~ Mused with Curtis about how different our lives might be now if we had never moved out of Connecticut. What sort of work might he have found? How much tighter might our finances be due to the higher cost of living and the fact that we probably wouldn’t have been able to get rid of our car. What if we had moved to Vermont like we always thought we would? Or if we had decided to not continue on to Utah while driving through Pennsylvania and had settled down there instead like we were tempted to? What if we had moved into the apartment complex that was our first choice when moving to Utah instead of into our third choice because it had Sunday hours? What differences might living in a completely different part of the Salt Lake Valley have made in the course of our lives?

~ Was stopped dead in my tracks by the beauty of Autumn starting finally starting to really show up out here. Bright yellow leaves popping against dark blueish gray clouds. Trees with red edged green leaves next to trees with leaves a burgundy red. There is a reason that Autumn is my favorite season.

I shaved my head and people freaked out…

I made the decision to shave my head a couple of days ago and posted a picture of the result on Facebook.

I knew that people were going to be surprised by just how short I went, just the year before I had hair down past my hips.

But I had been slowly cutting it shorter and shorter over the past year, and had recently cut it to about a 1/2 inch long so I didn’t think that it was really all that drastic or sudden of a change.

I got a lot of positive feedback, along with some somewhat neutral, possibly negative feedback. A guy friend of mine commented that he’s “had that same haircut!” He happens to have long hair now, so my response was “And I’ve had your current hairstyle before!”

And then I got a message asking me if I was “doing alright” “because few women shave their heads.”

Which honestly pissed me off.

A woman deciding to shave her head is not a sign of mental illness.

Then my grandmother straight out asked me in a comment on my picture if I was fighting cancer.

Oh No She Didn't Just Say That

To which I asked her if she seriously thought that I wouldn’t let everyone know that I was if that was what was going on.

Not every woman who shaves her head is sick. Some women shave their heads because they like the way they look with short hair.

I was then meant to feel guilty about my decision because “some women would do almost anything to have such beautiful hair.”

It’s not like I permanently cut off my hair. If I stop cutting it, it’ll grow back.

Also, I am in no way obligated to wear my hair long simply because other people find it pretty.

Think of it this way: My husband cuts his hair just as short as mine all the time and nobody cares. Because he’s a guy.

But when a woman, such as myself, decides to shave her head it’s a big deal and some people decide that she must be ill in some way (either physically or mentally) because “why would a woman shave her head?”

Warning Reflections in Mirror Distorted

“Because she felt like it” is a perfectly acceptable answer to that question by the way.

There is absolutely no reason why a woman can’t style her hair any damn way she wants, including deciding to shave it all off. Women don’t need long hair to still be feminine.

And the only reason why it should be a big deal is because of how awesome she looks with her new hairstyle.

Too Busy Being Awesome

And if “bald is beautiful” is only true to you if that person has cut their hair off for health reasons, if you are offended by the thought of women shaving their heads simply because they want to, I suggest that you may never have really meant it in the first place. Other women who are healthy deciding to shave their heads in no way takes away from the courageousness of women who had less choice in the matter.

Women are beautiful. Period. Hair length has nothing to with it.

The extremes of my hair, continued…

So, when I cut my hair to a 1/2 inch long I told people that was as short as I was gonna go.

I had already had a friend joke with me/make a concerned comment when I my hair was an inch long that if I went much shorter that my husband and I would have the same haircut.

Well, now we do.

Or at least we will once my husband trims his hair again. Right now my husband is actually the one with longer hair.

Which is fine. He can do whatever he wants with his hair.

And so can I. It’s only hair. It’ll grow back.

And then I can cut it all of again or let it continue to grow depending on how I feel.

The extremes of my hair…

When I started this blog almost 3 years ago I had extremely long hair. And at the time I had no plans of ever cutting it short ever again.

wpid-IMG_20140128_134053.jpg IMG_20130207_162309 IMG_20130316_112143

But then I started to feel like my hair was getting too long and that it was just too much work to maintain it. So in March of 2014 I did cut it.

In fact, I had my husband cut off about 15 inches of my hair. And for a while I was happy with it. It was quicker and easier to care for, and it didn’t get in the way as much. But it was still long, and eventually I got tired of the maintenance it required as well. So I had my husband cut my hair again this past April.

And then I cut it again this past July. And dyed it a dark purple.

7-13-2015 7-13-2015 back

At this point one of my friends told me that she thought I looked better with long hair and pointed out that if I went much shorter my husband and I would have the same hairstyle. I laughed at this and told her that I have gone about as short as my husband cuts his before.

And then I cut it again just a couple of days ago.

It is now only a 1/2 inch long. Which is still longer than the 1/8 inch that my husband cuts his to, but pretty damn close to the two of us having the same hairstyle. I’m not quite sure what point my friend was trying to get across with her comment, but I don’t think that I’m going to confuse anyone with my “boys” haircut.

I know that when I allow my hair to grow out that it’s gorgeous and thick. I know that a lot of people would love to have hair like mine when it’s long. And I know that I probably look better with longer hair.

BUT, I also know just how exhausting and time-consuming it can be to care for my hair when it’s long. I was frustrated with the amount of maintenance that it required when it was only an inch long. So that’s why I cut it as short as it is. Because this hairstyle is NO maintenance. Which is exactly what I was looking for.

I’m giving myself a break from bad hair days for a while.

I’m giving myself the gift of the time that I would have had to spend on maintaining my hair, every day, if I had kept it long or had even just kept it an inch long.

Also, it’s only hair. It’ll grow back.

My hair’s not so long anymore…

I’ve been growing my hair out for quite a long time and I finally had enough a couple of days ago though and informed my husband as he was getting up for the day that he was going to have to cut my hair for me soon before I did something drastic. Like taking some scissors to it myself. Or something really drastic, like taking the clippers to it and cutting it all off. He said he’d help me out and he went off to work and I went off to sleep. When he came home later that day he made good on his promise to help me out.

Here’s how long my hair got.

3-10-2014 Haircut Before (Edited)

Once we figured out about how long I wanted it to be he started cutting. I was standing next to a mirror, but could not see without turning my head. And I wasn’t about to turn my head (or move at all if I could help it) while my husband was cutting my hair, because the last thing I wanted to hear him say was “oops”. It became very clear from the surge of anxiety I felt when I heard him cutting the first few locks off that taking the clippers to it would have been a horribly bad idea. The sound of the scissors cutting through my hair and then the sound of the hair falling into the waste basket was more nerve wracking than I expected it to be. But at the same time it was freeing. And as more and more hair got cut off I felt less and less anxious and more happy.

Here is the result immediately after he was done cutting my hair. I hadn’t even seen it yet.

3-10-2014 Haircut After (Edited)

Here a few more photos after my hair had dried some.

It felt so short. I posted pictures on Facebook and my friends reminded me that my hair was still really long. Which it is, but it’s going to take a while to get used to it being about 15 or so inches shorter than it used to be.

But even though it feels really short to me now, I am still super happy with it. I’m really enjoying it not always being in the way.

Team Marvel is Victorious…

Over at The Matticus Kingdom there was another Official Matticus Kingdom Tug-of-War last week. The question to be answered this time around was “Which universe of superheroes (and villains) is superior: Marvel or DC?” I tugged on Team Marvel’s side of the rope, mostly because of The Avengers.

This years Official Matticus Kingdom Tug-of-War ended today, and Team Marvel was declared the winners! Go Team Marvel! In celebration of this glorious victory I am wearing my Marvel Villians tee shirt today.

Thanks djmatticus for holding this event on your blog. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for next years Official Matticus Kingdom Tug-of-War! And I hope your official kingdom tally keeper will have recovered from this years contest by then.

Music and random pictures…

I know I just recently posted a random shuffle song list, but I finally took the time to do one using my entire music library, so you will be getting yet another one from me today. I know you must all be super excited for that…

I’ve also decided after over a year of this blog being in existence to be a little less anonymous. I’m going to share some pictures of myself that actually show my face. I figure that if any of my friends and family stumble across this blog, they could easily figure out that it’s mine anyway, so why continue to hide? So here goes. This is what I actually look like:

Also, I want to share more of what my style is than just my nail polish choices. I have no idea how I should be dressing in order to “dress my age”, and I’m not really sure that I care. If I like it and I can afford it and I can find it in my size, I will wear it. Here are some examples of that. My favorite tee shirts:

IMG_20140124_181325 IMG_20140124_183048

Here are some more examples of my style:

These were all taken last year some time. Here are some more recent bathroom mirror selfies pictures:

And since it’s winter and we can’t afford to turn up the heat, here’s what all those cute tee shirts usually get hidden under:

I’ll have to do a post just based on all of the hoodies I own at some point… but this is the one that get’s worn most often.

Okay, so now on to the random shuffle music list: entire music library edition. Here are 75 songs that you will find in my music library. I did not actually listen to all of these songs as I was making the list, I did skip a lot of them, but I do own all of them…
